Keeping Home Priorities In View Article

I (Zach) read the article below today, and it brought heart-felt conviction to my soul. I see that I can often talk a good talk. However, in the end, my words are worthless if they are not backed up by actions. Please pray that Kait and I would not be hypocrites and that we would be on our knees before God for our family, friends and enemies.

Bible scholar Don Carson cautions us about parental hypocrisy by recalling the enduring impact of his parents’ prayerful example:
My father was a church planter in Québec, in the difficult years when there was strong opposition, some of it brutal. Baptist ministers alone spent a total of eight years in jail between 1950 and 1952. Dad’s congregations were not large; they were usually at the lower end of the two-digit range.
On Sunday mornings after the eleven o’clock service, Dad would often play the piano and call his three children to join him in singing, while Mum completed the preparations for dinner. But one Sunday morning in the late fifties, I recall, Dad was not at the piano, and was not to be found.
I finally tracked him down. The door of his study was ajar. I pushed it open, and there he was, kneeling in front of his big chair, praying and quietly weeping. This time I could hear what he was saying. He was interceding with God on behalf of the handful of people to whom he had preached, and in particular for the conversion of a few who regularly attended but who had never trusted Christ Jesus.
In the ranks of ecclesiastical hierarchies, my father is not a great man. He has never served a large church, never written a book, never discharged the duties of high denominational office. Doubtless his praying, too, embraces idioms and stylistic idiosyncrasies that should not be copied.
But with great gratitude to God, I testify that my parents were not hypocrites. That is the worst possible heritage to leave with children: high spiritual pretensions and low performance. My parents were the opposite: few pretensions, and disciplined performance.
What they prayed for were the important things, the things that congregate around the prayers of Scripture. And sometimes when I look at my own children, I wonder if, should the Lord give us another thirty years, they will remember their father as a man of prayer, or think of him as someone distant who was away from home rather a lot and who wrote a number of obscure books.
That quiet reflection often helps me to order my days.

Firsts

My 3 favorite men having guy time on the couch. First time for Emmitt to join!
First well-baby checkup. Bruce passed with flying colors! Back to birth weight after just 3 days.
First photo shoot :)
First Bath! My husband looks so handsome holding that babe.
First walk. I wore the Moby wrap - an amazing, hands free baby carrier, although I haven't mastered walking without at least one hand on Bruce yet ;)
First time peeing on Dad. Oh, sweet baby boys and their diapers...
It's been a great week getting settled in with our newest member! I'm so thankful to have Zach home this week with me. We're conquering everything as a team - from burping to bathing, we're enjoying all the 'us' time figuring out how to raise our little one. In the midst of the daily lessons and struggles of life, this is truly a season of joy and blessing. What an adventure God has us on.

"The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy." Psalm 126:3

Homecoming

Hello family and friends!

Bruce came home on Sunday around noon! On the way home, I don't think that I have ever driven that cautiously before. We were greeted by banners and storks in the front yard and a welcome home sign on our front door. Thank you Jordan and Meredith for decorating our humble abode! You guys are such a blessing. The other big news of the day was that Emmitt met Bruce.....and.....Emmitt was scared out of his mind. He did not know what to think about the little guy! We have had a few visitors these past few days and are expecting more in the days to come. We are so thankful for all of the love and support that we have received!

First Official Bruce Visitors = Whitney and Lindsey!

This is our friend Annie! She and her husband Bob were so helpful with watching Emmitt while we are at the hospital. Kait loves her coffee dates with Annie!
The big question is: Who is going to be the first person ever to leave a comment on our blog??? Don't miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.....seriously...

Bruce Is Here!

Bruce Isaiah Hillegas was born at 6:01 PM on March 23, 2012. He weighed in at 7 lbs. and 5 ounces, and he was 22 inches long.

Kait did such a good job with the labor, and I am so proud of her. This whole experience has drawn us closer together. It is crazy to think that we made the little guy. I am excited to share many more experiences like this one with Kait, Lord willing!

Here are a few pictures of the experience!

Thanks to Kait's parents, I ate some Chick Fil-A for lunch on Friday! Needless to say, Kait was sad that she didn't get any because she was NPO.

The Big Day

Hello family and friends,

This is my (Zach) first post ever in the blogosphere. All I can say is "It's about time." I have been an avid Christian blog reader since 2007 when my Grove City College roommate Clay recommended that I check out www.challies.com. I can't think of a better day to start blogging.

It is about 11:30 AM, and I am sitting next to my beautiful wife in the hospital delivery room. She is reading in 1st Peter (great little book of the Bible!), and I am writing this blog post.

Here is a thirty-second run down of the last 12 hours. We arrived at Magee Women's Hospital around 11 PM last night for a scheduled induction. After getting settled into our room, the doctor put Kait on the drug Pitocin to intensify contractions and dilation. Kait took the contractions head-on for the next 4.5 hours. All I can say is that she is a trooper. Around 7 AM this morning, Kait received an epidural after we found out from the OBGYN doctor that her labor was progressing very slowly. The doctor broke her water around 9AM when Kait was 100% effaced and 4+ cm dilated.

Over the last several hours, Kait and I have been coming to the increasing realization that we have absolutely 0% control over this situation. The unknown awaits us. It is scary. It is nerve-wracking...but this is where the truth of the gospel comes in. We have a solid Rock in Jesus Christ who stood the test on our behalf so that we can come to Him as we are, fears and doubts included. He doesn't expect us to be perfect, because He was perfect for us. I am reminded of these truths based on Romans 8:

"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,
    “For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:31-39 ESV)

We have a gracious, loving and sovereign God who is for us! Why is He for us? Why will he graciously give us all things? Why will nothing separate us from the love of God? Because He (God the Father) did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all! God knew that we (all mankind) could not solve the problem of sin by our own doing so He provided the solution Himself at the cost of His Son. His Son bore the wrath of that we FULLY deserved so that we could be made right with God! "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV)"

Therefore, in light of these truths, Kait and I can be confident that God is for us during the pregnancy. He is good. He will provide. We will post tomorrow with a picture of our little one. Stay tuned!

Here is a picture of us before we went to the hospital (Kait had s'mores pop tarts and a glass of milk)!

Do it Yourself Tuesday :)

Today is Tuesday and it's been a great day! It's 75 degrees here and I got the itch to do a DIY project outside on the patio. I've wanted to make a Spring/Summer wreath to hang on the front door with the change of seasons. It's the official first day of spring, so what better way to celebrate!?
The Inspiration: I LOVE forsythia bushes. They always bloom first around here, telling of the coming warm and sunny weather. We have a bush in the back of our house to enjoy.
The Players: Joann's has such a lovely garden of fake flowers. At 40% off I was able to buy a fun assortment. My plan was to start with a grapevine wreath and attach all of my flowers to it, but I found this wreath with forsythia already included. AMAZING! It was a bit plain for my liking so I doctored-up the wreath with some dogwood and daisy blooms.
The finished product!

I hung my wreath with some leftover burlap I had from another project. I like the old meets new affect.
This was a super easy and fairly inexpensive afternoon project. I'm happy with the outcome and look forward to it's warm welcome each time we come home :)

One last thing: I found my sunglasses today! This Tuesday couldn't get any better.

Happy Spring!!

A Day in the Life of Emmitt

Early this past April we brought home a sweet little creature (or terror, depending on the hour), Emmitt!! Emmitt has such a fun personality - he loves to snuggle on a daily basis and is ALWAYS happy :) It's been such a fun year with him.

While he can be mischievous on occasion, He's taught us a lot and we've made quite a few fun memories because of this little guy. He does not disappoint. Since Spring arrived early in Pittsburgh, we've been soaking up every free moment to enjoy the beautiful outside weather. Saturday was no exception and we seized the day with vigor!
We started out with a healthy (wink, wink) breakfast...
.....and Bible Study (Emmitt often joins us in this endeavor). We call him our 80 lb. lap dog!
Then, we were off to the dog park!!
Emmitt has made a lot of friends, which seems to occur quickly after a quick sniff of a rear end!
Emmitt was as happy as a clam despite being quarantined to the trunk of the car due to having muddy paws from his outing.
Emmitt was a wet (he had his first bath in three months) and sleepy dog by the end of the day!
Finally, we leave you with a Fall family photo (baby boy included)!

The Waiting Game

Well, as of today I am officially 41 weeks pregnant. That makes me 1 week overdue! With the anticipation building and not a whole lot going on (besides waiting), I've decided to start a blog. It seems like the appropriate time to start documenting some memories for our family and friends to follow. Below are a few pictures of our latest project - the nursery!

I have had so much fun working on cheap, DIY projects. Zach has been my handyman to hang them as I complete each one.
My mom made the baby's bedding for us and it's absolutely perfect! I used the scraps to make my kissing birds :)
Kelsey, my sweet sister-in-law gave us this painting as a shower gift. It matches perfectly in the baby's room, and I love the scripture verse she chose!

With each day that comes and goes without our 'little man' in sight, God is teaching me the ultimate lesson in contentment and trust in His sovereign plan.

Zach has been so supportive and encouraging as I've allowed the cloud of discouragement to loom. He's reminded me that God's ways are higher than mine and His thoughts are not my thoughts (Isaiah 55). While I may think the best time to bring home a little one is NOW (today Lord please!!), I have to trust in God's goodness and perfect plan for my life and for the life of our child. Romans 8 is one of the banner chapters that speaks over our little family and verse 28 promises that 'for those who love God, all things work together for the good, for those who are called according to His purpose.' So this is God's promise from scripture, and from it I can trust that our precious baby will come when God says it's time. And there is freedom that! What a hard (but necessary) lesson in living in the present and enjoying each day as it comes.

Even Emmitt is anxious for his little brother's arrival!

Well...not really - I think he's more excited about the dinosaur bone he received from our friends Annie and Bob.

That's all for now. Our 'little man' is just too happy in his little home for now. We'll keep you posted, but doctor's plan is to induce next Thursday unless he comes sooner. Until then, we'll be waiting with sheer excitement and ants in our pants for his arrival!
